2019 marked the return of the Student Poster Prize, sponsored by the Hunter Coal Environment Group. Congratulations to the winners of the Mine Rehab Conference Student Poster Prize. Six students competed for a total of $1000 in prize money. 1st prize received $500, 2nd prize $300, and 3rd prize $200.  It was The winner's were:

1st: Ahn Hoang - Screening of Australian Native Plant Species for Rhizoremediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon contaminated soil

2nd: Abinandan Sudharsanam -  Phycoremediation of Acid mine drainage

3rd: Ngoc Son Hai Nguyen -  Evaluation of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) uptake factors of native plants in Thai Nguyen mining sites - a study for phytoremediation

This competition is a great opportunity for students to present their ideas and research to professionals within the industry.

All student poster presenters got a 1 minute on-stage opportunity during the conference to introduce themselves and their poster to the delegates. The posters were on display throughout the conference and poster presenters were able to discuss their work with interested delegates during the tea and lunch breaks.

This year a limited number of scholarships are available for those students presenting posters to attend the conference.  For more information...

The student posters were judged on 5 equally weighted criteria:
  • Depth of Content
  • Content Knowledge and Organisation
  • Introduction and Abstract
  • Poster Design, and
  • Oral Presentation

Each category contained criteria items independently evaluated by the three judges. All materials submitted by the students, including the posters and abstracts, as well as the presentation contributed to the simple aggregation of scores by the three judges. The judge scores were added together for a grand total of points for each poster. The Poster Presentation Evaluation Criteria is attached below.

Sponsorship and Exhibitor Information

Sponsorship provides excellent networking opportunities and allows the conference to broaden its education program and increase services to attendees. Past Mine Rehab Conference sponsors have been overwhelmingly happy with the sponsorship opportunities, with many continuing their support from year to year.

A survey of 2019 exhibitors found over 93% of respondents noted that the conference met their expectations, and  all respondents rated their overall experience as Good to Very Good. Over 2/3 of respondents were interested in exhibiting at a future mine rehab conference.

Mine Tours

Organised by the Hunter Environmental Institute in partnership with CRC CARE.

An exciting and informative day of networking and education was had by all as we took a bus through the Lower Hunter Valley to visit mine rehabilitation, reafforestation and coastal rehabilitation work and acid mine drainage sites.

This was a great networking event.
When and Where
Friday 21st June 2019 Departed from NEX in King Street at 08:15 AM sharp and returned to NEX by 4pm
Picture
Westside Mine Pit Lake

First up we visited Glencore’s remarkably well rehabilitated Westside mine.  The mine area has been reshaped to remove any high walls and covered with topsoil and seeded with native vegetation.  The rehabilitated mine site has second generation flora and seven threatened species of wildlife have been observed.

The acid test - Neath creek water
Following this, we traveled to Neath to see the constructed efforts built to attempt rehabilitation of the sulphuric acid-polluted creek downhill from an old spoils pile at the Neath Colliery site. We had lunch and then walked through the bush on Crown Lands near Cessnock to view the Tailings dumped at this site, which have recorded sulphur content as high as 10.5%.

The final stop on the tour was Kooragang/Ash Island near Newcastle where we saw the outstanding reafforestation work of the Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project (KWRP) and viewed offset lands reconstructed for shorebird habitat and amphibian habitat. This is one of the largest active coastal rehabilitation projects in Australia, undertaken to compensate for the loss of fish, shorebird and other wildlife habitat in the Hunter estuary caused by 200 years of draining, filling and clearing. The wetlands feature expanses of mangrove and saltmarsh and in non-tidal areas, riparian woodlands, remnants of lowland floodplain rainforest and ephemeral, freshwater wetlands.
